A mechanism for the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. When the breakdown of the blood barrier is combined with the presence of neuron-binding autoantibodies in the serum, autoantibodies that previously could not enter the nervous system have direct access to target tissues. These antibodies react with different brain antigens and can cause neuronal cell death, neuroautoimmunity, and/or the formation of amyloid plaques.
